Choosing A Cutting Method, Plamsa, Laser or Waterjet?
Choosing between the different cutting methods available can be tricky, but in the end it comes down to the material, its thickness and application of the finished parts.
For Plasma cutting, the recommended cutting thickness is between 15mm (0.59 inches) and 50 mm (2 inches).
For stainless steel and carbon the recommended thickness for a plasma cutting is about 50 mm (2 inches) and for aluminium it should not really exceed 40mm (1.5 inches).
For thickness’s in excess of those quoted above,... -
What Is Shot Blasting?
What Is Shot Blasting?
Shot Blasting is a process used to strip imperfections, for surface protection and to prepare these surfaces for finishing. This can also be used before any welding or colouring. A Shot Blaster uses centrifugal force to fire a stream of abrasive material (steel beads) against a surface. When fired at a smooth surface, the abrasive can roughen the surface and vice versa, this is often essential to treat metals prior to a powder coating.

Bespoke Steel Staffies - Plasma Cut
We were approached by a client who had a bespoke request due to a recent event.
Unfortunately, their two Staffy dogs had passed away and they wanted to create a bespoke piece as a memorial to them. For the look that they were trying to create we decided to use 3mm mild steel to achieve the desired look.
The 3mm mild steel will rust over time to fit in with the surroundings of the garden.

Plasma Cut Into Mild Steel Bar Counter Front
Patrick Steel Ltd recently completed a plasma cutting project for Dhillon's Brewery.

Having worked for these guys in the past we decided to use 3mm mild steel for the bar counter front. The reason behind this was because the material was fit for purpose and perfect to achieve the look and feel to match the rest of their company.
We plasma cut their logo into multiple sheets of 3mm mild steel in order for them to be mounted onto the front of their mobile bar.

What is Lumsden grinding?
Lumsden is a popular make of grinder.
Lumsden grinding is the removal of material using a grinding machine. By doing it this way, higher rates of material are removed. Compared to other ways of grinding, larger areas can be machined without leaving lines.
Lumsden grinding comes in different types:
Reciprocal grinders to grind on a long rectangular table
Rotary grinders to grind on a circular magnetic table
Here at Patrick Steel Ltd we have 5 rotary grinders, Two 60”, Two 48” and One... -

Do Plasma Cutters Really Produce Clean Cuts?
We are often asked if Plasma cutting does what it says on the tin and produces precise cutting.
Precision plasma cutting has come a long way and the latest technologies provides a clean, sharp cut.
Plasma cutting cuts through conductive material with ease including stainless steel, aluminium, brass even copper. In fact, Plasma cutting can cut through any metal, regardless of the thickness.

What Is A CNC Plasma Cutter?
Plasma cutting is a process that cuts through materials using an accelerated jet of hot plasma.
A CNC Plasma cutter is a machine that has a plasma torch and is moved and directed by a computer.
CNC refers to “Computer Numerical Control”, which means a computer control the motion of the plasma machine.
CNC Plasma Cutting involves mechanised cutting via a computer system to move the torch in various directions which has been programmed into the computer.
In comparison to water jet cutters... -
Plasma cutting the Hobbits Door
We wanted to share with you one of the most enjoyable projects we have worked on.
Patrick Steel were approached by a local designer and was asked if we would help create a replica Hobbit door from the Lord of the Rings movies. As expected, we happily agreed to this fantastic project.
The metal work on the door was plasma cut from 8mm mild steel, with the hinges fabricated by our neighbours, Metal X Fabrications.
It took a lot longer to draught the intricate design on our Lantek software than... -
The Process of CNC Profile Cutting
High Quality Cutting Solutions

Plasma cutting guarantees quality, consistency and because of this means it is a cost-effective solution to the cutting process.
CNC Plasma cutting was initially developed to cut materials that were unsuitable for flame cutting for instance steel or aluminium, however the process is now used more widely and is suitable for a variety of carbon steel and thin low alloyed steels.

Advantages of CNC Plasma Cutting
CNC plasma cutting (computer numerical control plasma cutting) is a process that has been around for the last 30 years.
CNC plasma cutting systems use computers to design shapes and to control the cutting process, resulting in shapes that are very smooth and precise and that may include sharp corners, intricate curves and inside cuts.
Benefits of Using the CNC Plasma Cutting:
Precision and Accuracy- The plasma cutting machines are equipped with gears that ensure cutting is accurate without... -
Advantages Of Flame Cutting
Flame cutting is one of the most widely used cutting techniques for metal fabrication as the equipment has a relatively low cost and can be used to cut, weld, and heat steel. Flame cutting is versatile and can be used to weld almost any type of metal. The flame used in flame cutting burns at 6000 degrees Fahrenheit and is the only gas flame that is hot enough to melt the vast majority of all commercial metals.
